12/30/21. A new variant of COVID-19, named omicron is spreading with extreme rapidity, and countries around the world are setting new records for new daily infections. Though in general, the infections result in less severe cases, it is not clear whether this is because the virus is less potent or because there is more immunity due to previous spread and vaccination. Vaccination rates in developed countries are relatively high, between 50 and 70%. However, less developed countries, especially African countries, are much lower due to a shortage both of vaccinations, facilities, and health care workers.

A new variant of concern has been discovered in South Africa, now named omicron. While its spread is just beginning, the discovery panicked the financial markets and has focused increased attention in Europe, which as already seeing a fourth wave of infections largely as a result of the delta variant. However, countries around the world are still restricting movement and calling for wearing masks and other forms of mitigation, including stay-at-home orders, especially for the unvaccinated. As a result, there have also been protests in countries throughout the world about the restrictions.
