Afghan peace agreement
US and Taliban sign peace agreement that provides for withdrawal of all allied troops from Afghanistan, release of prisoners, and talks with the Afghan government. The US is to withdraw all of its roughly 12,000 remaining troops by April 2021 and will work with the UN to lift sanctions on the Taliban. About two-thirds of those troops are to leave within six months. In return, the Taliban have promised to cut ties with global terrorist groups and begin substantive power-sharing talks with the Afghan government. Crucially, the deal envisions the release of some 5,000 Taliban fighters currently imprisoned in Afghan jails in exchange for about 1,000 Afghan prisoners held by the rebel group.

Impeachment inquiry instituted
Democratic Party in the US House of Representatives announces an official impeachment investigation into President Trump. The initiating event was Trump urging Ukraine Pres Volodomyr Zelensky to investigate the conduct of political consultant Hunter Biden in Ukraine, as detailed in a report conducted by the government, but withheld from the House as required by law. Hunter Biden is the son of former vice president and current presidential candidate Joe Biden. Trump is said to have used the withholding military aid appropriated by the US Congress as a stick to force Zelensky to investigate. Trump has admitted that he has done so. However, this event and the seeming effort to suppress is only the latest in a long series of actions by the president that are said by opponents to violate constitutional directives and longstanding political norms, including profiting from the patronage of Trump hotels by foreign governments, obstruction of justice in interfering in the Mueller investigation and a refusal to recognize Russian interference in the 2016 election confirmed by all US intelligence services. There is some question whether Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi can initiate impeachment proceedings without calling a vote to approve by the entire House of Representatives.
