Bokai elected president
Weah concedes defeat in runoff voting. He won 49% of the vote to Bokai’s 51%.

Weah wins 43.84% of the vote and Bokai 43.44%. They will oppose each other in a runoff 11/14.

Voting begins in presidential and legislative elections. Weah has nineteen opposing candidates and is likely to face one in a runoff in 11/23. 78-year-old former vice president Joseph Boakai is Weah’s primary opponent. He has forged alliances, including with former warlord and senator Prince Johnson, who has threatened a popular revolt if the ruling party manipulates the elections.

Weah says he will run for president again this year. Liberia’s economy is in poor shape, and Weah has nothing little to stem endemic corruption in the country. The US has sanctioned three members of Weah’s government for corruption.

Results of 12/8 constitutional referendum announced. Voters approved the changes, which limit the head of state’s term and allow for dual citizenship. In the Senate elections the same day, the opposition won 15 of 30 seats. In Weah’s stronghold, one of his fiercest opponents, Sen. Darius Dillon, won 61% of the vote. Weah’s approval has dropped, as he has failed to improve the economy.

$100 million in newly minted currency is discovered to have gone missing during the election last year. Liberia does not have its own mint and the currency was printed in Sweden.

At inauguration, Weah cuts his salary by a quarter and proposes changing the constitution to allow foreigners to become citizens, and to eliminate the restriction that “only people of colour” can become Liberian and own property.

Unity Party expels Pres Johnson Sirleaf for interfering with 2017 presidential elections. Other party members were also expelled.
