Portugal sends judicial police to investigate coup attempt.

Prime Minister Patarice Trovoada says that an attempted coup has been foiled. Former president of the outgoing national assembly Delfim Neves and a former military officer who had already attempted a coup in 2009 were arrested and tried to attack the army headquarters.

The ruling party, the Independent Democratic Action (ADI) party loses eight seats and its majority, falling to 25 of the 55 seats, though it intends to create a coalition with the Sao Tome and Principe Independent Citizen Movement party (MCISTP), though that will give it only 27 seats. The Socialist opposition party, the Sao Tome and Principe Liberation Movement – Social Democrat Party (MLSTP-PSD), won 23 seats and plans to form a coalition with other small opposition parties.
