In elections today for the House of Representatives, the ruling Labour Party led by Robert Abela wins a clear majority.

Joseph Muscat announces that he will resign as leader of the Labor Party and then as prime minister in mid-January. Robert Abela, then elected leader of the Labor Party, will become prime minister upon the resignation.

Government charges businessman Yorgen Fenech with complicity in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia. There are reports that PM Muscat will step down.

PM Joseph Muscat says his chief of staff has resigned. Another person has been granted presidential pardon in return for testifying and providing evidence in the murder. Two cabinet ministers also resign. All say they are innocent of wrongdoing.

Businessman Yorgen Fenech arrested in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Malta arrests ten in murder of Cauana Galizia. All suspects are Maltese. The announcement is made by PM Muscat rather than the police, and comes soon after a fact-finding visit by the EU expressed concerns about a “culture of impunity” in the government.

Journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, who led the investigation into the Panama Papers and exposed corruption, is killed in an explosion at her home. The killing causes an uproar in the country and in Europe, where suspicions fall on the government.
