President Obiang announces that he will run for president for a sixth term next year.

Government moves up presidential election to 11/20/22, to coincide with the legislative elections. President Obiang, 80, has not said whether he will run or let his son Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, nicknamed Teodorin, run. The ruling party, the Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea (PDGE), holds 99 of the 100 seats in the outgoing lower house and all 70 seats in the Senate.

UK sanctions Teodorin Obiang Mangue, vice-president of Equatorial Guinea and son of the president, for misuse of public funds. He has been touted as Teodoro Obiang Nguema’s successor.
