North Korea pledges the complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and the US to security guarantees for the DPRK. The statement is very short, but Trump adds that he agreed to halt US exercises with South Korea. It is not known if denuclearization of the Korean peninsula would include elimination of US weapons. Trump says denuclearization will be verified, without specifics and that sanctions will remain on North Korea for now.

US officially traces a hacking attack on Sony’s computer systems by a group calling themselves “Guardians of Peace” to North Korea and vows reprisals. The attack stole an immense amount of data that, beginning on November 24, released a great deal of embarrassing and secret data about Sony’s business. The attack was provoked by Sony’s forthcoming The Interview, a movie about a fictional assassination attempt on Kim Jung-un. Sony, which had scheduled release for a first showing on 12/18 and wider release on 12/25, cancelled showings after the Guardians of Peace threatened attacks, possibly bombings, on the theaters.
