News reports that Laureano Ortega, Daniel Ortega’s son and thought to be the heir apparent, has contacted the US, probably about easing sanctions on the Ortega family. Because of the war in Ukraine, Russian cannot trade with Nicaragua, and Venezuela will no longer aid the country. The government is running out of money to pay the paramilitary forces that support it and to expand the police force to suppress growing dissent.

The government has reported only one death, but its figures are widely questioned and there has been minimal testing. More people have been arrested for violating quarantine than have contracted the virus.

Protests break out when government announces changes to the pension system that require larger contributions by workers, but also reduce benefits. However, the protests sprung from long-simmering dissatisfaction with the government over its increasing control of the political processes in the country and corruption.

Ortega easily wins third term with 72% of the vote. His wife Rosario Murillo is elected vice-president. Maximino Rodriguez of the opposition Liberal Constitutionalist Party wins 14%.

Increasing friction between indigenous Miskito peoples on Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast and settlers who have come there looking for gold or work in the timber industry. Others have lost their land because of drought. Some of the Miskito have been murdered. The Miskitos also oppose the Sandinista government because of wartime atrocities.
