Opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman, head of a group called Al-Wefaq that is now disbanded, is sentenced to life imprisonment. He and two aides had been acquitted in June, but an appeal reversed that ruling and sentenced all three to life. Salman, a Shiite, was already in prison. Rights advocates called the sentence a political move. Bahrain, a Shiite majority country ruled by the Sunni majority has outlawed all the opposition.
