Presidential election scheduled for December 10-12, with the winner to be announced on 12/18, though final results will not be available until 1/24. The voting is mainly a formality, as Sisi is expected to announce his candidacy and no real opposition is allowed. The economy is badly strained, however, with inflation rising precipitously in recent months and the currency losing value. The government is expected to switch to a flexible exchange rate for the currency, which could exacerbate tensions.

Though Ethiopia wants the dam to be completely filled within seven years, Egypt is worried that it will remove too much water from the Blue Nile. Egypt is already in a water shortage.

Egypt, Ethiopia, and Sudan pledge to continue to look for a satisfactory agreement about the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, a huge hydroelectric power project that will make Ethiopia a major power exporter on the continent. Sudan and Egypt fear it will seriously reduce water supply downstream. Egypt, which takes 90% of its drinking water from the Nile, has experienced water shortages in recent years.

Egyptians voting 4/20 through 4/22 on amendments and changes to the constitution that will strengthen the president’s powers. The president’s term would be increased to six years and add two years to Sisi’s current term and allow him to run for election in 2024. Another would create a Senate, one-third of which would be selected by the president. The lower house would be reduced from 596 to 450, with 25% of the seats reserved for women. The president would also be allowed to appoint members of the judiciary. There is little doubt that the changes will be approved.
