Ousmane Kaba of the Party of Democrats for Hope (Pade) and with support in the Rally of the Guinean People party, announces he will run for president. Though technically an opposition candidate, he is a close associate of Condé. The National Front for the Defence of the Constitution (FNDC), made up of the main opposition parties and members of civil society, has called for more protests against the current government. The ruling party will declare its candidate at its convention 8/5-8/6.

Amid warnings of civil unrest and strikes in the mining sector, Conde replaces thirteen of thirty-three ministers. French authorities have charged that industrialist Vincent Bollore’s conglomerate contributed to Conde campaign in return for a concession on the Conakry main port. Though a French company had won a competition for the port, Conde cancelled that contract in 2011 and the contract was awarded to Bollore. There are also rumors that Conde will attempt to change the constitution to allow him to run for a third term in 2020.
