Observers from CARICOM say voting was generally free and fair. The VHP remains well ahead of Bouterse’s NDP.

With about 90% of votes counted, the Progressive Reform Party (VHP), led by former Justice Minister Chandrikapersad "Chan" Santokhi, is set to win 20 seats in Suriname's 51-seat Parliament. Bouterse’s NDP is likely to secure 16. Santokhi has called on the NDP to concede defeat, but Bouterse calls for a recount. Parliament will select the next president by August; the candidate must win two-thirds of the votes. The VHP has begun talks with other parties to secure a majority in parliament.

Bouterse sentenced
In a trial in a military court, Bouterse is found guilty of the murder of the fifteen government critics on 12/20/82. He is sentenced to twenty years in prison, but is immune from imprisonment because he is president.

Military court finds Pres Desi Bouterse guilty of murder of fifteen political opponents after a coup in 1982. Currently in China on a state visit, Bouterse was expected to return on 11/30 or 12/1. The opposition calls for his resignation. Bouterse has denied the charges and has the right to appeal. Six military officers were also convicted.
