The State Committee for National Security rearrests former deputy chief of Custom Service Raimbek Matraimov due to an ongoing investigation into allegations of money laundering. The arrest comes days after hundreds protested in Bishkek over a court commuting his sentence last week.

Jasparov is elected president
Sadyr Japarov, a nationalist who favors close ties with Russia, wins by a landslide in snap presidential election.

Jeenbekov resigns. He has approved Japarov as prime minister.

Parliament elects Sadyr Japarov to be prime minister, but members also dispute the legitimacy of the election for lack of a legitimare quorum. About 50 members of the 120-seat parliament were there, but the speaker allowed 11 other votes by people who had received power-of-attorney documents. Parliament Deputy Aida Kasymalieva said that she left the session on 10/10 to prevent a quorum and that her vote had been cast illegally. Jasparov was an adviser to former President Kurmanbek Bakiev, who was overthrown in 2010. He was also a member of parliament, and says that his 2017 conviction on charges of kidnapping a regional governor was politically motivated. He was freed by protestors on 10/6.

Jeenbekov says that he will resign as soon as a new cabinet is in place. He declares a state of emergency in the capital, Bishkek, where there have been constant protests and many arrests.

Several Kyrgyz opposition parties form the People’s Coordination Council Opposition, which announces that it is running the country and dissolving parliament. Japarov says he would propose a constitutional reform before holding presidential and parliamentary elections in two to three months, but he is not supported by the new council. His party, Mekenchil does not recognize the authority of the council. Jeenbekov remains nominally the president.

Parliament begins impeachment hearings against Jeenbekov.

Election annulled
After a night of widespread protests, the Central Election Commission annuls the vote “to avoid tension.” The protestors took over the White House, the seat of parliament and the president and freed Atambayev from prison. It is not clear when new elections will be held.

Prime Minister Kubatbek Boronov and his government resign. Jeenbekov appoints Sadyr Japarov to replace him. Parliament attempts to nominate opposition politician Sadyr Zhaparov to be prime minister, but protestors enter the hotel where it is meeting and chase them out.

Parliamentary elections. The Birimdik (Unity) party of President Sooronbai Jeenbekov’s closest supporters lead in preliminary results with 24.53% of the vote, Mekenim Kyrgyzstan (My Motherland Kyrgyzstan) is second with 22.2%. The party includes former coalition members and ex-opposition MPs, and has avoided positioning itself as either allied with or opposed to the president.

Atambayev is sentenced to eleven years in prison on corruption charges, which he denies.

Supreme Council confirms former first deputy prime minister Kubatbek Boronov as new prime minister.

Atambayev arrested in second attempt. He has been at odds with his successor. His immunity was lifted by parliament earlier this year and Jeenbekov has accused him of crimes, likely corruption.
