Full independence
Barbados officially becomes a republic with Pres Sandra Mason head of state. It will remain within the Commonwealth.

Mason elected president
Sandra Mason elected president, replacing Queen Elizabeth II of England as head of state, and Barbados moves closer to becoming a republic.

Mottley announces that Barbados will become a republic in 2021 and will replace Queen Elizabeth II with a Barbadian.

BLP dominates elections
In parliamentary elections, Barbados Labour Party (BLP) wins all thirty seats. Mia Mottley will become the first female prime minister. Fruendel Stuart, departing prime minister, resigns as head of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP). Mottley has been a leader in education and technology and youth employment.
