Soldiers led by Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani announce on television that President Mohamed Bazoum has been removed because of “deteriorating security situation and bad governance.” Borders are closed, a nationwide curfew declared, and all institutions of the government are suspended. Bazoum has been taken into custody, but the soldiers imply that they will not hurt him. Niger has been an important ally for western nations in fighting insurgencies and Al Shabab.
